In 2016 we established Run Africa Athletics Club (RAAC), registered with the Ethiopian Athletics Federation and eligible to compete nationally and internationally. Most elite Ethiopian athletes hail from humble rural backgrounds; similarly, most drop out of school in their teens in order to move to Addis Ababa and pursue athletics.
Educational levels and interpersonal skills are therefore generally low among athletes, despite their all-out dedication and self-belief in the profession, training twice a day, six days a week.
RAAC creates a strong community atmosphere within the club and attracts top athletes for competition. We also broaden the athletes’ personal and professional skills through structured coaching and mentoring in sports training techniques, life planning and goal setting, massage and English language. In this way RAAC is creating linkages between Ethiopian athletics and adventure tourism.
